Internet and Technology: Creating problems or helping? What's promising? Whats problematic?

Does the internet and technology offer promise and hope for education or learning or does it just create addtional problems? What do you see as the promise and what do you see as the problems?
I think that the internet and technology that is associated with it offers great promise. The first thing that comes to my mind when I think fo things that technology, via the internet is the 2-program had at my highschool. Class were offered over the internet and people from different schools took the same class. Teachers are always in need of educational tools to help them teach, so often they are always creating or combining many different ideas. To help other educators they can share their ideas, or units. The internet is a great way to share this. In the elementary classroom, kids can use the internet to research about many different topics. Educational websites have interactive programs, information, and other things that can be a great help in supplementing a unit that your teaching. Now, it is possible to take college class over the internet, and as another great use of technology we can simply take a look at the Katie website. With the ability for conversing over the internet, places that didn't formerly have the access to a good teaching can now have that access. For music theory many of the listening examles are posted on the site and from it we can access them from our personal computers. It certainly beats having to buy a ton of CDs or going to the library to check out the CDs. Obviously students will have to be taught how to use the internet correclty i.e.- getting accurate information off of it and interet security, but that is the world that we live in now- its not going to revert to a pre internet society- children should learn to use the tools that are at hand.Technology is a tool that can be utilized to better teach: the great potential that it holds far outways the negatives.

Chris-
Good points... I definitely agree that Katie and other online things have been really helpful for classes. There's a lot of trash out there, and if we can help students learn how to recognize good sources (i/e not using wikipedia) then the internet has a lot to offer.
